What OCR actually does
Optical character recognition (OCR) estimates characters from image pixels. The result is editable text rather than a perfect recreation of the original layout. Toolmintly currently supports English OCR with a Tesseract-based model running in compatible browsers; the model and supporting resources are downloaded when used.
Extract text in four steps
- Capture a sharp screenshot or photo. Include the complete text area and avoid glare or shadows.
- Open image to text and select a supported image.
- Choose an appropriate text layout or preparation setting. Cropping away unrelated graphics can help.
- Run OCR, check the editable result, then copy or download it. Compare critical names and numbers with the original.
How to get more accurate results
Start with high-resolution images where letters are large enough to read. Keep text horizontal, increase contrast when necessary and crop out irrelevant backgrounds. A clean screenshot of a document usually works better than a tilted photo of glossy paper. If the output mixes reading order, try a simpler page region or use a single-line setting where appropriate.
Why receipts and screenshots can be difficult
Thin receipt fonts, folds, shadows, decorative UI text, blurred photos and multi-column tables can confuse recognition. Similar shapes such as 0/O, 1/I and 5/S are common failure points. OCR can also introduce or omit spaces, decimal points or punctuation. Always review dates, amounts, account references, addresses and legal or medical text manually.
Does OCR support handwriting?
This tool is intended for printed English text. Handwriting, heavily stylized type and text in other languages are not reliably supported. It is not a transcription guarantee and should not be used without verification for important records.
Is the selected screenshot uploaded?
Image content is processed locally in the browser rather than intentionally uploaded to an application processing service. Browser scripts, language files and model resources may be loaded from their providers, and standard website analytics can collect page-usage data rather than the recognized text. Related tasks
If the source is a PDF, first export the relevant page using PDF to image. A sufficiently sharp image can then be passed to the OCR tool.
