The quick answer
JPG (JPEG) is a practical choice for photographs where smaller files matter more than perfect reproduction. PNG suits graphics, screenshots and images that need transparency or lossless pixel storage. WebP often provides smaller web images at useful quality settings and can also support transparency.
| Format | Good for | Transparency | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| JPG | Photographs, product photos, social images | No | Lossy saves discard detail; repeated saving can reduce quality |
| PNG | Logos, screenshots, graphics with sharp text | Yes | Large photographic PNGs can be much heavier than JPG/WebP |
| WebP | Website images, product catalogues, transparent web graphics | Yes | Check compatibility with the app or platform receiving the file |
For a website or online store
Use a suitable resolution first: a very large image remains slow to load even with an efficient format. For photographs, test JPG and WebP at similar visible quality. For logos with transparent edges, PNG or WebP may be a better match. Keep an untouched master copy so you can re-export when a marketplace needs a different format.
Try the image resizer for exact pixel dimensions, then the image compressor to check the actual saved file size. Compression results depend on the picture, chosen settings and browser encoder; no particular percentage of reduction is guaranteed.
For transparent product photos
JPG has no alpha channel. When a transparent PNG or WebP is converted to JPG, transparent areas must be replaced by an opaque color. The image converter lets you choose that fill. If you first need to isolate an object, try the background remover and review its edges before exporting.
For graphics and screenshots
Flat colors, text and sharp lines may show visible artifacts in heavily compressed JPG files. Start with PNG when exact edges matter, then compare WebP for web delivery if your target software accepts it. A file extension change alone is not a real conversion: the image must be decoded and re-encoded.
Can conversion improve a blurry image?
No. Changing JPG to PNG can prevent additional loss from subsequent edits, but it does not reconstruct information already removed by earlier compression. Likewise, resizing to a larger pixel count does not bring back lost detail. Preserve your original source files whenever possible.
How to convert a file in Toolmintly
